Your first lesson

The first day we start by assembling the glider and getting our harness and helmet on. Next we move on to learn how to fly a hang glider by putting our training glider up on our simulator. Students get to learn all the basic control movements to fly the glider while safely hanging from the glider in the simulator first.

After the simulator training we learn how to pick the glider up and run with it. When the student can do that we start moving up our shallow training hill and teach more skills to steer the glider and to launch it. By the end of the lesson almost every student will get at least one short flight down the bunny hill where they can apply what they learned on the simulator.

Hang gliding ratings

Students are not required to pursue a rating. Many people take a lesson or two simply for fun. For students who want to continue, these ratings mark the progression toward independent and more advanced flying.

Most people know fairly quickly whether they want to pursue a rating. The flying bug does not bite everyone, but if you do get bit, hang gliding is an amazing activity that very few people get to experience.

Video is a valuable learning tool. NorCal Hang Gliding has used GoPro cameras for years to help students review and refine their skills.
